Roller-boom reefing opinions

Hi I have a GH31 with a roller reefing system that I have not used.

I have fitted slab reefing but the battens in the main don't reef down very well as I assume the main was designed with the roller system in mind.

Any advantages to the roller system?

I tore my main clean in half yesterday and its too old to repair so looking to get a new one made and need to decide whether to fix the slab reefing or consider using what was there originally.

Any help welcome!

Cheers
Matt

Hi Matt,
Personally I’d go for the slab reefing option.
Most of the roller systems I’ve had in the past never seem to roll particularly well and trying to get the main flat never really worked, the leech ended up being too long and flapped about. It also meant going up to the mast to operated the roller handle.
Slab reefing was set up to all be done from the cockpit and, in my experience, was quicker and resulted in a better shaped main.
Cheers
