3 Tonner

Hi Eventiders, In the early 1960's I rember reading a book about the construction of the YM 3 Tonner yacht. Or at least I think I can rember it. Does anyone know it's title ? Or who wrote it ? Or who published it ? Are there any 3Ts around ? Can anyone tell me how they sailed or anything else about ...

Hard Chine

Yes, I was aware that a hard chine hull has a bit more initial stability than a double chine. But I could not convince myself that that was sufficient to explain the almost total dominance of hard chine. As Chris says, a double chine certainly looks much better and must be more easily driven and mor...

Hard Chine.

I have long wondered why so many boats intended for amature construction are hard chine. Even conic projection does not make it easy to twist the bottom planks up to the stem. It just makes it possible. I can well rember how hard it was on my small Herron dinghy, and the planks were only 3/16 in. th...

Hi Eventiders, After a long pause, I would like to add to the question of suitable timber sorts. Above, I asked about a wood I called Sippo (German name). I have since founf out that it should be Sipo, in spite of the short 'i' and it is not Sapelli. In England it is called Utile. What do you think ...

Hi Chris and John, Many thanks for your contributions. Re foam filling: The real reason I asked was because I had a suspicion it might not be good for the wood. I have now dropped the idea. I have heard it being used by "off shore dinghy" sailors, both for buoyancy and protection in case of a collis...

Many thanks for the helpful replys to date. I am hoping to get a few more, especially relating to the centre board/plate version. Please. I do not really want a deeper keel, if only because it would be more difficult to get it on and off a trailer. I am/was hoping the Mk2's 160 lb balast keel combin...

Senior Requests

Hi All, From other posts on the forum, I get the impression that the Senior suffers from excessive weatherhelm. Could anyone confirm that ? If anybody has fitted a skeg, it would be interesting to know how much lateral area it has and what effect it had on handling ? From the drawings, I get the imp...

Timber for SENIOR

[quote="Eventide Owners Group"]Hello there, today I would recommend Iroko for all the structural parts of your boat. It is plantation grown and will out last all the normal Mahogony's etc. You could get away with building in softwood, but you open yourself up to a boat rotting away under you in less...
