A further think and chat with those with more experience, suggests that the soot indicates incomplete combustion of the fuel. This could be caused by dirty/blocked air filters.

I think this means that the recipient hasn't read the email yet. When you send it it goes to Outbox, then when it's been read, it goes to Sent Mail.
