I was just looking through some old photos and found one taken in the Norfolk Broads in 1991 of what looks VERY like a Senior. It was painted white and moored in a little dike which I believe was somewhere on the River Ant. Any ideas on name, owner etc? I am thinking of building a Senior (have the plans) and wonder if any other Senior builders could give me the benefit of their experience? Cheers from Jack Robins in South Australia, email: jakaj@ihug.com.au

From Andrew Nugent anugent@uwic.ac.uk I like the new format but is this the place to post a question? anyway, I am looking after a Yachting monthly 3 tonner for a couple of years a (the blue one I think featured on this site (its now 'sandpiper') and called Brie, built in 1946, Gaff centreboard.I have had different info on how to recaulk the seams. I have been advised to either fill with putty mixed with pink primer (over oakum) or caulk with an underwater seam sealant, the name of which alludes me at the mo. Any ideas anyone? Also I understand that Maurice Griffiths designed a "Hatch Garage" to stop water going below through the gap between the sliding hatch and the deck, has anyone any info on this? Finally, is it possible to repair a canvass deck? (a seam has lifted), any replies are appreciated Thanks Andrew

I am a relative novice to sailing. I would like to thank everyone on this site, for the information on the Eventide. As a result on Sunday I will be the proud owner of an Eventide, although in disrepair at the moment, hopefully soon she will be in the water again. The technical side and the camaraderie from Fellow Eventide owners is second to none. Well done. This site is great. Alan Purdy Apurdy41@aol.com

Hello folks,

because of the constraints of this version of Front Page, the Guest Page does not have the same sort of response as a Message board might have. We are looking at ways of changing this, but at the moment if you wish to leave a general comment here by all means do, but follow it up with an e-mail to either myself, the Secretary, or other members listed on the contacts page.

As I do not always read this page I might miss a request here, but not if it is in the list I open every day!!

(Andrew, Seniors, speak to me and I will give you more info and chances to view etc!)

Hello Jack,

I know you are in Wakefield and are a member, hope you have been in touch with Walter Mills, the steel advisor. He built a WW in Steel, now is finishing a Riptide. His phone number is in the front of the Bulletin.

Have you considered a builders meet? A Sunday afternoon later in the year, with the kettle availble, could get a few interested parties round? also gives you an incentive to finish some of the jobs!!

Contact me direct via the contacts page,

Little reminder to all the East coast sailors, the Bradwell meet is fast approaching. With the lousey weather we have had for the best part of the year. Yes, we did get a week on board earlier, and yes we have been out and about a few times in the week, but on the whole it has not been terrific has it....

We are hoping for a good weekend, so dust of your copy of East Coast Rivers and come along to Bradwell for the friendliest weekends sailing and socialising!

Sailing on the Blackwaterlast week, in company with Rodney and Elizabeth on board 'Rosy', we could have been any where, it does not get much better, a boat you have built, great company, 30 degrees with blue sky and seas and a force 4!

Will it mean a bumper turn out at Bradwell next week??

Have seen a newly launched Senior that will delight you, that will be there, also heard from our Trans Atlantic couple , Kathy and Roger, they left a message on my phone yesterday, sailing from Brixham to Bradwell for the meet. You should have heard the Seagulls in the background. Look out for cream sails now on the junk rig!

Good sailing to all

The Solent group were at it again this weekend, sailing right through the middle of a 200 plus race on the approach to Cowes and 10 tonne of steel was on stbd, we were spanking along on a NE F4-5,we later anchored up on the reach between the Folly and Island Harbour, 5 boats in all. We took the ebb back up to cowes in our tenders for a spot of shopping and hostery testing, then we dropped into East Cowes to have a pint in the new pub there. The beer was so expensive,we concluded that the showers were included. Suitably refreshed we went back onboard for a spot of interboat visiting and sundowners, the eve was finished off with a trip up to the Folly which was packed and when we got back to the pontoon we found that one of the read what is on my T shirt tw--s had let our dingies drift off up stream. They were soon rescued and soon we were onboard for some night caps.We all had a good sail back to our ports, and yes there is a fleet assembling off of Spithead, comming your way soon saddam. Photos to be supplied this week by the boilerman. ps Stiggy and I had to anchor off a non textile beach whilst he sorted out the water pump on his engine. Weds 18th We will be at the Southampton boat show. Guiness tent 1300hrs. All for now from the sunny south coast.

Hello to all the hundreds of friends I have made via the EOA.

Sadly after 29 years membership and 25 years on committee, (in all roles bar Treasurer), I have tendered my resignation as Secretary.

I have had a fundamental difference of opinion with a section of the committee. I felt I could no longer continue with the path they had chosen and felt it right I removed myself from committee straight away.

The EOA web site will continue for the moment, but a new webmaster is sought, as he too agrees with my sentiments. I have already had support from other members.

I hope the EOA prospers, to be honest, as I said at the meeting, I am not indispensable, indeed the cemeteries are full of indispensable people! Anyone with time and commitment can do what I have done.

So if you feel up to it I'm sure the President and his Vice Presidents, especially, will love to hear from you.

In the meantime I will still be flying the EOA flag at my masthead and I have not set up a 'M.G. Appreciation society' as one or two thought I might! (It's a thought though???)

Anyone wishing to contact me personally can do so on either my SOS e-mail, john@saving-old-seagulls.co.uk or of course on my personal e-mail, bluebell.cottage@virgin.net  if you want to know more.

I will still wave at you out there as we cross wakes. I still value all the friendships I have made.

Best regards to all my friends, fair winds and lee-going tides.

Weekend 12-13th oct saw yet another meet of three EOA boats at Gosport. Two Eventidesn Kaifas and Eventually and a Senior Woodpecker at "C" pontoon. Saturday saw NW winds 12 knts not a bad sail down from Littlehampton to Portsmouth, Sunday the weather turned for the worse, Setting off at 0930 hrs for the Looe channel in a force 4 SE the wind soon increased to force 5/6 by 1100 it had increased to a 7, the Looe channel was pritty rough by now, but too far down to the East to turn back and run to Chichester. Pressing on to the Mixon the wind increasing to 40knts white foam everywhere and the sea with a white marble appearance. the small choppy sea with 4' waves was now raging at a long swell with wave about 10'-12' in height towering with white creasts, The boat marched on with a small section of my in mast main, and a pocket hankercheif of jib, motor sailing making 4knts with the autohelm taking full controll of the situation.aproaching Littlehampton at 1500 hrs I was contacted by Solent coast guard to see if I was ok they knew I was on route as I had checked in earlier, because someone on Climping beach had phoned them to report a vessel in distress just off the shore, I of course informed that all was well.while in contact the asked what the viz was like and the sea state! I arrive at Littlehampton at 1530hrs and discharged my self with them, Quite an experience to go through, when I had put Kaifas on the pontoon mooring and went into the yacht club they had recorded the wind as gusting a force 9. just goes to show how good the old Eventides can handle rough weather. Greetings from across the canal. My name is Louis Schwartz and I live in Amsterdam, Holland. I was very happy to find out about your EOA website and learn a little more about the "family" of my Wild Duck. She is a lovely, steel build, 20 footer from 1962. I fell in love with her immediately and am now her proud owner since spring 2001. Back in the sixties, as I understood from her previous owner, only two or three steel Wild Ducks were build here in Holland by "Willems vlettenbouw". Although designed to be build in plywood, I must say that her sailing qualities are superb! I was specifically looking for a small, steel boat with an inboard engine as I'm used to sailing the IJsselmeer, Waddenzee and North sea. Conditions can get pretty rough out there and I just feel more comfortable in steel than in wood. My Wild Duck is powered by an 10HP Bukh diesel DV10, which is more than enough to handle any situation. Although you can clearly see the resemblance with the other boats on the website, I was a little disappointed to find only one photograph of a Wild Duck (on land). Hopefully I will find the time to send you're (new) secretary some photos soon. In the meantime, if there is anybody out there who can tell me more about the Wild Duck, or is interested to hear more about mine, please get in touch with me. Greetings, Louis Schwartz.

Open Letter.

First off I should state an interest. John Williams is my brother in law and therefore it is fair that I should be considered biased.

The committee and myself  had a meeting nearly five years ago discuss this site, it's style and content. There have been no other such meetings since then.

This site is one of the most successful club sites ever to have been produced. To put this in perspective over the last 5 years not one member of the EOA has contacted me with ideas for things to include on the site or any way of making it better (Ever) - other than John Williams.

That said, with regard to the Web Site (for which I have be web master since it's inception several years ago) I too will be terminating my involvement in the EOA and this site. This is not a case of blind loyalty but rather the reality that without John's input there is unlikely to be any more versions of the site (It is now at version 10).

It would be very sad to see this site degrade and disappear and disappear it will. Many people have contributed to this site over the years but it is not generally known that 95% of the content has been contributed by John Williams. Trying to get content to add to the site has been like pulling teeth. Witness the number of requests on the site for information about YOUR boats which we all like reading about.

For what it's worth, I agree that those who's job it is to promote our Yachting Monthly designs should at least own one.

I have lived with site for 5 years now and it will be sad to see it go. There are many people out there who can do it better (assuming you get the support) I hope therefore that one will come forward and take over as web master of the EOA.

Once again, many thanks to those who have contributed photographs, comments and articles to this site.

I will continue to maintain the site until Christmas during which time I will be happy to pass on the site code and passwords to anyone who wishes to take over, but only with the Committee's written permission.

I hope we don't see ERROR 404 on this site.

Barry Sturrock

I know nothing of the "disagreement" having been a rather passive member of the EOA, but I am very sorry that John and Barry have resigned (and do wonder at the judgement of "my" committee to let that happen.)

John was very helpful to me when I was first looking for an Eventide about 8 years ago and on a couple of occasions since. I eventually bought an E24 called Odden and after much work, including fitting a new diesel and roller reefing genoa, she now cruises the Bristol Channel under a new name, Niarbyl. Through John, I recently got in touch with the gentleman who built her and have found out much about her history. The web site is brilliant and it is surely a great shame that the webmaster, Barry, has resigned - I'm tempted to send in pictures of Niarbyl.

A Message from the Committee

The Committee would like to reassure all our members that the EOA continues; it is bigger than any one member, and we will do everything possible to further the objectives of the Association. We would like to record our appreciation of John Williams's efforts for the EOA over many years.

The Committee has agreed a new webmaster, and arrangements are being made to transfer the website as soon as possible. We will meet, probably next week, to formally agree the new nominations and arrangements for John's former role, and will publish them to the members immediately afterwards.

In the meantime, of course, we would welcome any volunteers, new Committee members are always welcome, and the AGM is coming up in January - e-mail me at any time.(terry@tmcmenamin.freeserve.co.uk)

An open letter to John Williams, who was always a great friend, Dear John, I have'nt quite worked out what all the fuss is about, but you will not make any new friends and will probably lose some old ones, by walking away from it, because you can't have your own way. The EOA has always been democratic, and as such you should have accepted what has gone on and fought whatever has upset you from the inside, without a thought of resigning, which of course should be done at the AGM. Hello Dave, good to hear you are still about!

I will write back to you here, without any real details, if you or anyone else wishes to know more about why I have stood down now, please contact me at my home e-mail address as given above.

I have not walked away as you put it, and there was no vote either! Had there been it might have been different! I am still handling all the mail, subscriptions and enquiries. I will not destroy the paperwork either!

Suffice to say I intend to protect this association with the help of you and all the others out there that care, and am drafting a change in the rules to allow members who sell their boats to become associate members with access to the bulletin, meets etc, but not to be eligible to be in the prime offices of the association. I will be posting this to you and all other members before the AGM.(Off my own back!)

For over two years now, I have wanted to stand down, but have always been persuaded to take the job back on as no-one else was willing.

Dave, if I waited till the AGM to stand down, who do you think would still be Secretary after the AGM?

I am very willing to do many things as before, but my time on committee is over. I and my brother in law have even volunteered to carry on the web site, but I do not think I am wanted by some, who sadly seem to know very little about the Owners assoc. For instance I was told today that the Webmaster had been paid for the design of the site, this was was news to me and to him too. This last year he was an honorary member, before that I paid his sub! Would have cost the EOA several thousand pounds, we do not have! Where does all this come from??

There is a limit to what a person is willing to do, and how much time you can devote to it, as I have already said, the cemeteries are full of indispensable men and any one with commitment, and importantly, support, could do what I have done. I agree with Terry, this association is more than one person, or it should be. After 25 years on committee, it's time. I hope one of my detractors will step up to be counted.

I hope to have your support at the AGM and thank you to all those of you who have already offered yours. The Eventide Owners Association is very special, and I hope it can be kept that way. I have not devoted over half of my life to you all to see someone kick it away.

I would love to hear yours or anyone's views on what you think this Association is about. These pages are for just that, comment.

Regards to all my Eventide friends,

John Williams, Sec Retired!

Yet another meet accomplished by the south coast possee at Gosport on Bonfire weekend, where Stiggy on his boat EVENTUALLY has just changed his engine from a air cooled 10hp single cyl to a 25hp 3 cylinder lister, a few modifications were needed and hopefully sea triales next weekend. ANGELUS with Capt Cliveus 5 miles from Langstone and myself on KAIFAS 28 miles from Littlehampton went to inspect the work allong with Richard who owns WOODPECKER a Senior 16 miles from Southampton. The weather was a bit grim raining all day and quite windy, A trip into town for eats during the afternoon at the Mcdonalds to tempory halt the hunger, and a quick look around the local market before retreating into the the pub (THE CASTLE) just out side the gates of Camper & Nicholson's for a fer beers before the resturant side opens up at 1900hrs. There have been several good food write ups about the quality and quantity of the food in the Castle, and yes it's all true!!! Capt Cliveus has now purchased his his restoration project a Senior sail No YMS198 called POLLY formerly called ROO TOO a bilge keeld versition Gunter rigged from the Norfolk broads at Oulton Broad quite a lot has already been done, new deck and coach roof, but still plenty to go.. The other owner is Richard from Woodpecker who also ownes a CORROBE as well. Well if all goes well with the weather next week end I will keep you informed as to Stiggys sea trials (he will proberly be found guilty anyway!!)

ps:: Come on you East coast posse lets have some info as to what you get up to at you meets on the East coast and also ALL the othe Eventiders out there where ever you hold your meets.

A message to our members

The Committee met on 7 November and unanimously approved new arrangements to take effect immediately as follows: -

The role previously undertaken by John Williams will be revised, so that sales of burgees and other materials will be dealt with by Rodney Leaper, Plans Secretary. This is a rationalisation, as Rodney already deals with plans and books sales. The new web master is David Seymour Jones. I will be Acting Secretary until the AGM,as it is the members who should have the say in that appointment. Please address any correspondence to me at 9 Collumbell Avenue Ockbrook Derbyshire, DE72 3TF, or at terry@tmcmenamin.freeserve.co.uk.

John Williams is being formally requested to hand over the necessary passwords and physical material as soon as possible, but it will take a little while.

Our new Eventide Class Representative is Chris Beazer, one of our vice-presidents. The role of Blackwater Area Representative is left open for now, if anyone would like to take this on we would be very pleased to accept your nomination.

Our new Secretary will be just that, i.e. will not be required to take on a technical role or be an IT whizzo, just to manage two committee meetings and the AGM each year, and to deal with correspondence.

More details will be published in the bulletin, due out shortly.

The AGM is on 24 January, and we hope to see as many members as possible there, and to appoint one or two additional committee members as well as a new Secretary. Any volunteers will be more than welcomed!

The committee has demonstrated that it is very able and willing to work together in the interests of the EOA as a whole, and members can be confident that the Association will; thrive with such an enthusiastic team leading it.

Terry McMenamin President

Dear Nigel

Apologies for taking so long in replying to your comments above - I've only just noticed it. Many thanks for your kind words. I have given 5 years to this site and I'm sure it will carry on as before albeit with a fresh new design (which it could well do with).

Please do send you pictures of Niarbyl as it has always difficult to get pictures of members boats.

These should be forwarded to David Seymour-Jones at seymour.jones@virgin.net the new Webmaster.

Regards

Barry Sturrock

Not much to report this weekend s last weekend on my return to Littlehampton I found that my prop shaft coupling had become loose and was rattling about a slight rigging noise was\all that caught my aar, two small grub screws were all that held it in position, the keyway was rounded off on all faces including the coupling key slot as well! Had the shaft welded with e316 ss rods to fill in the damage then turned back to size 1.125in and a new couplin purchased this time a split type that requires no key!! simply clamps onto the shaft with four bolts. Fitted engine back last weekend, managed to just undoo the engine mounts and lift it high enough to remove the shaft after removing the prop. All went well on Sunday last on the afternoon tide and sounded much better. Hopefully there will be a meet next wekend weather permitting, Capt Cliveus changed his toilet hose and Stiggy had sea trials in Eventually have yet to talk to them to see how they faired!! catch you all later

Not much to report from last weekend except that on my return from Gosport i njoticed a ringing noise from the engine area, it turned out to be the shaft coupling loose on the prop shaft, It was keyed on and held in place with two grub screws. the key had become rounded as did the keyway slot in the coupling. I had to have the s/s shaft welded with E316 rods to repair the damage and then turned back down to 1.125in. Managed to remove the shaft after removal of the prop I un did the engine mounts and lifted the engine up about 4ins and slide it out. I hjave replaced the coupling with a split type that equires \no key and clamps onto the shaft. Sunday the sea triles went well for me, that reminds me must phone Stiggy on eventually to see how he got on with his!!! Capt Cliveus changed the lav outlet hose all went well I think!! Perhaps next weekend we will be at sea again if the weather permits!!!

Stiggy I thank you for those kind words, What other members have to know about him is that when he 1st met with us he was a novice and now through our guidance he has got the hang of it like the rest of us.The other thing is to read his post with a german accent because that is where he hails from. We have taught him some english swear words whilst we were at it, as well. Yep we will be out this weekend comming, proving that the EVENTIDE is an all year round boat. It might be a trip to Chichester marina for another classic scnapps party. captcliveusuk www.eventides@yahoogroups.com

As the weather was inclement for a bit of sailing last weekend I visited my daughter at Bath university, so whilst wife and daughter went shopping for the afternoon I slipped over to Bristol with Charlie to have a look over the SS GREAT BRITAIN,(yes that is a fair drop from the Cliffden suspension bridge)We dropped into the drydock 1st and surveyed her bottom. Construction seems to be clinker iron plates, and from down there it does look impressive,Engine was a dirty great big upside down V4 steam engine whith the worlds biggest timming chain taking the power from the crank to the prop shaft. Well worth a look over with the afternoon finishing off in a proper pub The Nova scocia real yellow stained sea charts on the pasted walls 2 choices of scrumpy on the pumptaps.Apparently Brunel came 2nd on some popsey BBC programe recently. As he was doing this in the mid 1800s you can see why. Captcliveusuk

After work on Friday still feeling a bit jaded from the office party the day before, I got down to the Locks SC (langstone harbour) just before the bar shut and could not even force one down. 2300hrs off down the slip with the tender cant see my boat because of the fog which is swirling around row out in the genral direction she looms into view, there is hardly any wind I can hear the far off rumble of traffic on the A27 a good 2miles + and I can here ships sounding their fog horns out to sea as they head up past the nab,the weather is mild which is a change of late. A truly MG evening there was the familar smell that rushed up as soon as the hatch was slid forward the start of the weekend smell. After reading a bit and doing some chores I turn in next morning I am feeling rough I have the onset of the flu I turn on the radio and learn that in the early hours a container ship has T boned a car transporter and sunk it up channel off of Dunkirk. How could this happen in this day and age and did they have lookouts posted in the bows of each ship. Depressed that some poeple are not going to get their new beemers for christmas, I battled it out the rest of the weekend with the flu, not nice. At home now with a hot toddy in hand. From the RYA there is a certain Lord who will not be getting any dues from the Solent group next year apparently under common law we can anchor up in his river for Zilch this applies to Newtown creek as well, just another nugget from the Solent group. captcliveusuk@yahoo.com

Well done Rodney LEAPER (plans sec) He has got us a two page exposure in the Sailing mag WATERCRAFT. It is good enough for other folks in the Assoc to photocopy it and pin it to noticeboards in your sailing clubs around the world which would generate a bit more interest.Happy christmas to you all and I hope that you all get some good sailing in next year. This includes you as well John. captcliveusuk@yahoo.com
