When Golden Hind Halyard Winches Go Bad

Post by MB63 »

I had an unpleasant experience on my GH26 last week when one of the mast-mounted halyard winches tore out of the mast and whistled past my face as it disappeared skywards at a rate of knots.

Has anyone else had this problem? I am concerned about the other winch now, and want to get someone to professionally remount both. Does anyone know any reasonably priced repair people in the Hamble area?

I'm afraid I don't have a direct answer to your question MB, but you might get a couple of ideas from this thread.

Upwardly Mobile winches!

Sounds horrific, could have been really nasty.. Made me look at mine!

Was it the stainless backing plate that parted from the mast, or the winch from the plate??

My plates are insulated from the ali mast with foam and secured with Monel rivets. They are heavier and stronger than the normal Ali...

At the back of my winch are 6 x 6mm setscrews and nuts, I looked to make sure the anti shake washers and nuts were tight...

good warning for all..
