Hi, sounds great. What model volo penta did you fit. Can you please let me know when you have it running how it performs as I have just bought a 1970 MD1B, 10bhp volvo penta that I am going to fit to my 24ft Eventide.
Your feed back would be most appreciated.

Cheers
Mike

Hi mike, the engine i put in my boat is a volvo penta 9 hp 2001 series, its seems a lot of work for the extra 3hp, i think the engine is circa 1987 but it seems to run ok,the boat is still on the hard until next weekend weather permitting when i shall refloat her, then i will email you hopefully with glowing reports of bashing into waves and actually going forward.

regards chris.

Hi Mike,
the MD1 was fitted to dozens of Eventides, it is a great little plodder! A trifle noisy by modern standards, you might consider some sound proofing round the engine bay and under the bridgedeck, but they seemed to carry on with the same note all day!

Seen your plea for a manual, have you tried surfing for one? Some older motors manuals can be found as downloads now....

Make sure the exhaust is sound where it has the water injected into it, they used to corrode badly there, that was the only fault I ever heard with them, apart from the price of spares!

John

Hi John
Great to hear from you and also thanks for the valued advise. I have just found and downloaded a copy of the instruction book from a volvo penta web site so that is awesome.
When I bought the yacht it had an MD1 7hp with it (out of the yacht) in pieces. I honestly believe it is not work the effort or cost to rebuild. I have bought the MD1B, 10hp model with the MS-reverse gear, which is a 1970. It has had some gearbox and head work recently done on it. A volvo penta specialist is giving it a tidy and repaint at present. He says the dyna-starter generator on them is not that great so suggests the fitting of an alternator to the forward of the motor to run off the belts. The MS gearbox makes them about 4inch longer then the standard MD1 so will have to positon motor more foreward and a little higher on the engine beds. Not too much of a problem I dont believe. Will have motor out for a while yet so thought I would use the procedure for laying up in regard to protecting the inside of the engine and the cooling intake etc with the correct additive.
Hopefully I will get a few more years yet out of this motor and will keep my eyes open for buying another one to have on standby for parts maybe. I just love the old motors and also its within the keeping of the yacht to its near original condition. Later on if I do have to upgrade with motor I will stick to volvo penta and that way only small, if any modification to the engine bed should only be necessary.
By the way John, the name "MS-reverse gear" is that basically what this type of gearbox is called. Its oil conpartment is separate to that of the motor.
From all the above John do you think I am on the right track. Any additional information you may have would be greatly accepted.

Kind regards
Mike

"MS-reverse gear
MS = Monoshift. You will find a link to workshop manuals that includes the gear box in my reply on the "general" board
