Drop Keel in Atlantic Clipper

Post by Ken Linklater »

I have Just spent 3 years restoring Atlantic Clipper Rebecca. She was built 1973 and sunk in Loch Fyne in 1980's or 90's.

Two issues I would like help / advise with.

1) MizzenRigging; The Mizzen doesen't seem secure. Is a triassic stay from Mizzen Top to Main mast advisable?

2)Drop Keel; Does the vessel really NEED a drop keel? Rebecca's was corroded so I cut it out and temporarily
Glassed in the slot. Not very keen on drop keels
a) What are the Disadvantages ? (I imagine chafe, banging and a bent drop keel ...disastrous!)
b) Will she sail ok without it ?
I would be very grateful to hear from anyone with experience on these issues

Yours

Hello Ken,

the keel was not the one MG designed, so he did not mention the design later..... the drop keel replaced his L shaped keel.

In later years the builder did away with drop keel and simply glassed it over.

They seem to sail quite well like that!

Re the rig if there is any fore and aft movement in that Mizzen you could add an extra stay, even if a rope stay.

Send some pics in of her sailing wel with the keel glassed in!

Regards,
John
