Hello Chris, not so sure about the stainless bolts, unless they are totally sealed in Sikaflex so no part is in the water..

Stainless has the ability to rot twice as fast as cast iron if in waterlogged timber with no air round it, 'Sheilding corrosion' it is called.

I would have gone for bronze if they may be damp.

Saying that it looks like a proper job that fairing block, amazing how many do not bother. nice to see the transducer is actually pointing down too, not angled with the hull, another mistake many make....

Great job,
John

It's A4 stainless completely covered in Sikaflex 291. Mind you bearing in mind your comments I'll keep an eye on them. They're belt and braces in any event everything is Sika'd and the bronxe shaft of teh transducer and it's locking nut are clamping everything. The stainless bolts are effectively to coounteract any torsional forces and to provide an even clamping pressure against the Sikaflex across the whole.

Hello Chris,

sounds as if you will be OK. I Just worry about s/s underwater, seen it dissapear to nothing. Have a set of keelbolts here that I have photographed and put on the site, looks like a metal worm has eaten right through them. Hasten to add they were not mine! In wet timber with no oxygen they will rot like this, even the best A4 grade has no protection against 'Sheilding corrosion'.

5 years ago I removed the inlet seacock fitting on Fiddlers Green when I saw a dribble mark on the inside of the hull. To my horror the nuts just turned and fell off, underneath I found black dust where the 3 studs had been, the seacock came off in my hand with a tug, was only held by the sikaflex!!

I had not realised the 3 studs were s/s. I replaced them with bronze!

Regards,
John

A bit more progress to report, should be in just in time for the end of the season

The teak was left weighed down for a week to allow the Sealtack to cure fully. Then there was plenty of sanding to get the new teak levelled smoothly with the original stuff.

Image

I then masked everything up in preparation for applying the SealOne Fast caulking to the seams. I'd read this made for easier application and clean up. The theory is it can be peeled up after application before the sealant cures. DON'T DO IT!! It was worse than a total waste of time. The advantages are fiction and it caused more problems than it solved. I found removing the tape was more likely to damage the fresh seam and pull out the soft sealant. I had to leave it to cure with the tape in place and then the tape fouled the use of a sharp chisel to trim things up. The seams I had to re do without tape were very easy to trim and clean.

Image

Here's an overview of the re-laid deck, not perfect but I'm pretty pleased with it. It should blend in really well once it gets the Coelan finish on. It was tricky trying to fit in with the teak that was already in place with the variable seam widths etc.

Image

I'm very pleased with the seams on the areas away from the original teak where I was able to have more control over the spacing.

Image

Progress elsewhere...

The hull has been rubbed down and filled or fettled as required. (That's the other half lending a hand :D )

Two coats of Pre-Kote have been applied in preparation for the final Toplac finish coats.

Painting and antifouling is finished and she's booked to go in next Saturday morning!

Just hope the weather is nice to me so I can get the Coelan on the deck before then. (No great worry if I have to do it after launch, just would be easier to do some bit's on dry land).

Well, the big day has been and gone, how did it go?

Nervous moments as she's picked up by the lifting cradle...

Image

Heading down the slip way....

Image

Into the water....

Image

Reversing out into the creek (I'm on deck, I got someone who knows what he's doing to helm this first trip to her new berth, now was not the time for me to be having my first ever long keel reversing experiment!)

Image

Settled into her new home (the boat to port is an Albert Strange canoe yawl, so she's keeping good company)...

Image

Very relieved to report that all the repairs and replaced skin fittings etc all appeared watertight. A little seepage around the keelson, but much much less than I was expecting. I appreciate there are no pics of the foredeck repair, I'm saving those till I've finished the Coelan etc. Just really pleased to have her back where she belongs

Well done Chris she is a credit to you.

Now what we need if for you to send all those pics into the site proper with some text and we can devote a page of the main site to your handiwork!

Hope to hear from you,
Regards,
John

Hi Chris, I bet that felt good! I recall the day the tiller came alive in my hand, all that effort, all that time! The benefits far outweighed the effort.

The picture says it all.

Look forward to being able to print all this on the site proper.

Regards,
John
