small ships register a waste of money?

I looked at the small ships register website and could see no way of viewing the register itself, it seems like they are giving you the opportunity to spend £24 on registration but giving you nothing in return.
The boat I am buying is supposed to be on the register but that information does not seem to be of any use to me.
Am I wrong?

It does not really matter if the boat is presently on the SSR as as as soon as you buy it the registration lapses anyway, if you are contemplating going foreign with your boat then you will need to register for identification purposes.

Hello Steve,
Agree with Chris, the SSR is not for the publics benefit, but to prevent an owner wanting to go foreign having to have full Merchant Shipping Act Registration for their little boat.
The certificate is all you need for the continent but is just a bit of paper and doen not even prove ownership. Valid 5 years and cheap and useful for foreign travel.
If you are stayng in the UK don't bother.
