What's the weight of a Cockler?

Post by Timbow »

I am trying to organise the road transport of a Cockler for restoration. The weight of the vessel is a bit of an issue with the hauliers and I don't know what it is.

Does anyone know or is able to look up the designed displacement of a 25' Cockler? Data for a similar vessel like a Bawley would be useful. Even an informed or calculated guess would be a guide.

Early replies would be especially valued since I am in danger of losing the boat if I cannot organise the moving of her.

Thanks

Hi surely cannot be more than 4 ton a vertue comes in at 4 1/2ton.
Nor is she going to be much more than an eventide which is about 3 tonnes or 2 empty.
How are they proposing moving her with an arctic?
Or a smaller trailer? If is a smaller trailer how about dropping the keel and transporting separately??
hope this is of help.
How about asking someone in the org to help?
Or get a recovery firm to do it on a quiet day?
they have heavier hiabs and the bigger waggons can carry that sort of weight.
Or a builders mechants
Or what about a farmer.
Email John privately he is very helpful.

thanks.

I am no longer going ahead with this one.

Just for the record the best estimates and a look at the old drawings indicated 4 to 5 tons. Quite a lot of water could easily put her at over 5. A big Hiab will lift that weight but it is far too much to tow behind a landrover so she needs to go on a lorry or on a specialist boat transport trailer.

Hello Tim,

Do I suspect from you comments that you had a set of drawings for the Cockler?

If so we would love to lay our hand on then to scan them for others, as these drawings are getting scarse these days. One day no one will have any. Our policy is to pass all these drawings on to members at cost, so the designs can be repaired and restored, we doub anyone wil have time, money or inclination to build from the log for a good few years...

When the oil finally runs out that might change of course!

If you do have a set we can scan can you contact me, enquiries@eventides.org.uk

by the way I agree with your estimate, my Eventide (27ft and heavier keel) weighs in at 4 ton all up... so 5 tons would be my figure, but you could strip all the floor boards and rigging off, plus anything movable... Members did that with a GH 28 not too long back and got it down below 2 ton.

John
