We have a golden hinde 31' built in 1969. she is a wood/fiberglass constrution. the deck has some soft spots in the uper layers of wood under the fiberglass coat. the deck is still solid underneath. What type of construcion and materials would they have used on this deck. should we strip the glass and re glass it or should we just fill it with a resin. Hull # is 103 0r 106 we can't remember exacrtly right now.

soft decks

From experience with other GH's the decks are ply and were sometimes GRP coated. Best to cut out any soft patches of ply, to solid and sound wood, then at least 3" further. then go further still so you can join the ply sheet halfway between a pair of beams, NEVER on a beam.

A wide butt joint beneath, even filling the space between the two beams, (That way you do not notice the butt joint from below!). then glue with epoxy and use epoxy glue to re glue glass cloth sheathing on top. sand with an orbital sander and you will not se the join!

My decks were built this way, then covered in panels of 'Treadmaster' for non slip. non slip deck paint or even laid teak strips, 'DekTek' or similar give splendid finish.

the important thing is to remove all soft timber, just filling is a waste of time as the rot, for that is what it will be, will continue.
