change from single mast rig to Ketch

Post by joe »

Hi All,

I own a 28' Searover with a shallow main plus bilge keels.
The boat heels rather quickly but is incredibly stable once happy.
I am considering changing it into a ketch, hoping it will calm down her temperament.
I would appreciate any ideas / comments.

Thanks,

Joe

Hi Joe, I would guess the hull shape dictates the initial heeling and then the ballast kicks in. I am not sure if a ketch rig will improve that alot. Maybe it is a case of adding more ballast to keep the heeling angle low, or reducing sail earlier!

Many of MGs boats were slightly under ballasted, so that might be a cheaper option. try bags of sand or beach shingle as an experiment.

Worked for me with my first Eventide. I then added lead inside, later deepened the keel. not something you could or should do I suspect.!

hope this helps.
