Lone Gull II dimensions

Post by Gerry »

As a new member and new owner of the Lone Gull junk schooner 'Ivory Gull' I'd be grateful with some help over the dimensions of the class. Firstly I'd like to know the displacement of the vessel as I have conflicting figures. Secondly I'd like to know the sail area of the original sail plan for comparison with the current rig. Any help would be much appreciated.

Regards,

Gerry.

Lone gull II sail area

Post by Fiddler's Green »

I have looked up an old leaflet and found the following.

Mainsail 248 sq ft
No 1 Jib 150 sq ft

This is standard bermudan rig of course, and without a bowsprit. not sure as this design needed one as the write up says she was light on the helm, two fingers up to F5, a firm hand above that.

hope this helps.

Thanks for this John. I was wondering if Ivory Gull was carrying too little sail but at 500 sq ft probably not. Of course junks can afford to have big sails since reefing them is just a matter of moments.

All the best,

Gerry.
