Haven't stopped looking for an Eventide!

Post by Howlin »

Hi,
I'm still searching for an Eventide in ready to go condition! I've been trying to afford a GH but that's out of my budget! Would love to find something in the South Wales area if possible.
Thanks for any help.
Simon.

Keep looking Simon, there are a lot out there....! we get a few on the site, but there must be dozens in the backs of boatyards up and down the country, just needs time and legwork!

Sadly in Essex i have heard of a couple of boatyards breaking up wooden boats as their owners give up on them and cannot sell... sad that few have the time or inclination to look after wooden boats now. Pleased to hear you are not one of them!

Thanks John. I'm still looking! You're dead on about wooden boats. I've got a lovely wood '68 GP14 in my flotiila of 'oldies'. She is a joy to sail, looks good and does a top job for me. I'm sure something will come up relatively local, as ever cost is important and I don't want to be spending loads of money on moving a boat when that cash could be used more constructively on the boat itself! There's a lovely looking Eventide in Aberystwyth, I'm hoping to see the owner and just gossip in the Spring before she goes back into the water!

Simon.

I'm coming to the conclusion that the real cost of purchasing a wooden boat is the time. I definitely feel a sense of responsibility toward my little bit of history that goes beyond what I actually paid for her

Thats true, but it also possibly depends on how much time & effort you are prepared to invest in a further generation?
as despite our best efforts, unless you have your own followers all this knowledge will be lost , personally I sometimes wonder if sometimes we are working in the right/wrong century?

I do try to think of my 'flottila' of assorted 'woodies' not just for my preference for wood but also in terms of their history and their enduring practicality. It is, sadly, right to be worried about maintaining the knowledge base. I firmly believe this knowledge will be valuable to future generations as the world changes. The other thing for me is that I find most of the jobs on 'woodies' fun!. I've been a practical organic chemist for many years, maybe it's just the smell of paint and varnish that I'm into!

Simon.
