Post by michael mooney »

A very general enquiry about the eventide.I'm looking at an eventide 28 in steel(1989) the boat is in good condition if a bit overpowered with a 45 hp diesel engine.any tips on her suitability for use on inland waterways and for offshore cruising? With a long keel and shoal draught how will she handle under sail.survey tips?speed?Grateful for any info.michael.

Steel Eventide

Post by Fiddler's Green »

Hello Michael.

the Eventide 26 has been stretched often, my own was, and 28ft is not unheard of. They are heavy boats in steel and sail well in a decent breeze, better if the keel has been deepened by 3" and extra weight added.

As for inland waterways use, sadly at over 8ft beam she will be too wide for the narrow canals, but on the broad canals she will stand up to the knocks better. Of course she will have to have an easily lowered rig, as it will spend most of it's time down inland.

They are no greyhounds, but will look after you. Off the wind they can give a good turn of speed.

The 45 hp motor is not really a lot over the op, 30 would be about right for Sea work, and you have a little in hand, perhaps you could run a second very large alternator or 240 volt set up... that would soak up a little of the excess.

I would look to a specialist for a survey, see our advisors page.

hope this helps,
Regards,
John
