Re: Kylix 29 Mystery

I wonder if I can throw a little light onto this. If it was set on an inner forestay I bet it was a No 1, or a forestaysail. When I bought my hull years ago I had a letter from MG with it and a set of drawings for the 27 ft Kylix. The reason was the hull builder had ordered some sails and had them t...

Re: trailer design for 26' eventide

45 mph! rather you than me with that sort of weight on! I have a 3 axle trailer for our Eventide 26 and with an anti snake stabaliser as well, we will not go faster than 40! I have had a trailer snake out of control once, a car on a proper transporter at 40 mph, frightened the life out of me, and I ...

Re: Refitting cast Iron keel

Hello there I thought I would add a note here re the keel. There is a lot on the site proper about this too. The Eventide 24 ballast keel should now weigh a minimum of 1020lb. If the keel is still off and it weighs less, (measure it, cast iron it could be 5" deep and 560lb, 8" deep and 780lb or 10" ...

Re: Anodes on GH hull

I have had an anode under my wooden hull, a pear shaped one, for the last 20 years. it is through bolted with galvanised bolts and sealed with sikaflex. I have replaced the anodes about every 5 years when they are about half eroded. I have the bolts on the inside of this anode connected to the engin...

Re: Sabb diesel

Glad to hear you have repaired yours Jason. re the hot spot on the head on Helenrose, I would suspect silting, worth trying to flush with a closed circuit with descaler in it, Job to do ashore, container over the back to catch the exhaust water filled with descaler and a pipe from the bottom of the ...

Re: MD1B - intermittant compression

I would worry that the valve seats were burnt, either way it has to be stripped to be sorted, or it is a mooring lump. still the parts are available, at a price!

Re: Standing rigging

Hello John, yes there is no back stay as such, just a pair of shrouds brought well aft. some might be tempted to fit running shrouds but it is an added complication. Alan designed a bumkin for other similar designs and I have seen 3 Tonners with them fitted. Bermudan versions only. However never hea...

Re: Drop Keel in Atlantic Clipper

Hello Ken, the keel was not the one MG designed, so he did not mention the design later..... the drop keel replaced his L shaped keel. In later years the builder did away with drop keel and simply glassed it over. They seem to sail quite well like that! Re the rig if there is any fore and aft moveme...

Re: GH31 Inner Forestay

Hello John, If the extra stay is to the mast head and has an easy release on the deck I bet it was rigged for twin headsail down wind sailing. It could also have been fitted for the flying of a storm Jib in adverse conditions. When not in use it would have been pulled back to the mast and secured. I...

Re: lug sail

This is a good one, one wonders why you would like to do this. The Bermudan cutter rig is a proven rig. I suppose if the sail centre of effort is the same, it would work, but the extra weight aloft might have to be compensated with extra ballast. Maybe the Old Gaffers might be able to assist. A sail...

Re: removing my bilge keels for improved windward performance

Remove bilge keels? Not a good idea unless you drop the main keel and increase the ballast weight and depth to match the fin keel version. CD of drawings that includes all of this available to enrolled members for cost. £5.00 UK, £6.50 over seas inc P&P. The design weight of the keel on a 24 is 1020...
