Why Hard chine?

I think it is because the designer can ensure the framework is simple and strong, though double chine may be better for the shape on the water, nearer to the round bilge optimum. However there is another side to Hard chine or single chine. The inherent initial stability built in to the designs built...

boat building timbers....

Utile is not one I see recommended for boatbuilding, as it is only moderatley durable. You really have to be looking at the Iroko and similar if you want your creation to last a lifetime. With lesser timbers and careful treatment, preservative, Epoxy and the like you can achieve good results, but it...

Sealing decks

Hi Brendan, I know we have spoken, but I thought I would reply on the forum as well so others might see it and comment. There are several ways of attacking this.... Hopefully there will be no soft or rotten patches first, due to the dreaded fresh water geting into the wood.... You could clean back t...

Re MD1

Hi Mike, the MD1 was fitted to dozens of Eventides, it is a great little plodder! A trifle noisy by modern standards, you might consider some sound proofing round the engine bay and under the bridgedeck, but they seemed to carry on with the same note all day! Seen your plea for a manual, have you tr...

Painting under the Waterline!

The best advice I can offer is to pop along to your nearest Chandler and pick a paint manufacturer. Then get his guide book to painting and follow that.... I think you will be able to get away without stripping all off, but at some stage that might have to be done. if you do then it might be time to...

cockpits

Hello David, have a look at the pics on the Gallery, Senior section. There you will see owners do their own thing and most fabricate from ply these days. Make templates in cardboard first! so long as you put in good strong timbers across the cockpit floor area to set the cockpit sole down on you wil...

Decks

Hi Chris, if you cut back to a beam the most beam width you might get would be 2" if you are lucky. This means the edge of the ply sheet will only be on that beam by less than 1". In that 1" or less you have to secure it, with screws that are neither near the edge of the beam nor the edge of the ply...

Hi snark, Cutting out soft wood is always a good idea, if you can scarf in a neat bit of hardwood, suitably glued and screwed, it will stop it spreading. Try a little clear cuprinol in the bilge area, it is always where fresh water lays that rot will develope. As for oil, scrub it off with hot deter...

Well I never, a two stroke! Well some of what I said is true, forget about changing the oil and filter though! Drain the crank if it has a drain. most 2 stroke inboards do have one or two even, but you have to search sometimes to find them. Knew a Stuart owner of 12 years who had no idea his Stuart ...

Hello snark, this in a way is good, for you at least know there is a problem before you launch her and she takes water! Now you can sort it before you launch! Restorable, of course! Go along the length of that joint and gouge it out, either by hand.... hard, or with a suitable angle grinder or circu...
