Engines

Yes the Sabb 10 would be great in an Eventide 24. I have had an 8hp Stuart Turner and that was enough powere, but being petrol needed to rev to get the power out. Many have fitted 9 and 10 hp diesels to great effect. The Sabb is heaviert than some of the more modern motors, but my stuart 8 weighed i...

Hello Steve, I know I have answered privately, but If I put a comment on here, (now I have managed to get back on!!!) I thought others might benefit. If when sailing you have to wrench the tiller up to windward hard, all the time, you have Weatherhelm. The boat designs by MG sometimes did have exces...

Guard rails....

A problem for all of us! Even with an Eventide. I ended up using 8mm stainless bolts through massive ply plates and backing plates. The idea was to stop them moving, thus allowing water beneath the fittings and into the wood. Rain in there causes rot... so far so good... I can remove my staunchions ...

Log?

Hi Chris, I have all the old magazines and from time to time dip into them to bring out articles, I will have a search and find it, worth reprinting! I am going to reprint many of the old articles as so many of the authors have now joined us! Numbers up to 450 now! amazing isn't it! Agree with what ...

Come on Senior owners speak up! I can tell you Len that you are right about the centreboard version being a bit on the tender side! It has to be sailed like a dinghy, but on the plus side it will float in a puddle! Many Seniors have bowsprits to offset the weatherhelm, that seems to work, I have see...

Hello there, Bill is it? Trakmark was great for a few years, then they all lifted round the edges! To strip it a hot air gun works wonders! I would strip it off then borrow a belt sander to remove the debris, once cleaned up with acetone you could apply another coat of epoxy if it needs it, or go di...

Roller mainsail!

Hello Mike! Bit up market are Roller mainsails! The vertical rolling ones that is not the boom rollers. The engineering is a bit costly and complex. I do know the GH advisor Brian Neale has one, might be worth looking the Advisors page up for him. I think another option might be lazyjacks and bringi...

GH to Windward?

I think I have already spoken to Lee, so how about some of the GH owners giving their opinions? I know our boats will never be great performers, when put up against a fin keel boat, but I think the GH or a modern Eventide, (with the deeper, heavier keel) hold their own against most cruising boats. R...

suitable timbers?

Hi Len, I have just had a look at our 'Owners Tips' page, 'Timber for Boatbuilding' Seems Sapele is only moderately durable, so will survive 10 to 15 years if buried bare in the garden! Sounds as if you might be OK with that, you will no doubt treat it with rot proofing before you paint or maybe eve...

Hello James, the man to speak to about this is Brian Neale. you will find his e-mail and phone number on the 'Advisors' page of the site. I know he has repaired rudder fittings recently on another boat! He does not use the computer much, his wife does, so a phone call might be better! Plans for this...

Ah Ha, All revealed... I think there might be a new edition of 'The Magician of the Swatchways' out soon, I have spoken to the author Dick Durham. We were saying there was a lot missing.... Could this be the book I wonder... I will get back in touch with him, he was supposed to be organising a sail ...

Hello there, today I would recommend Iroko for all the structural parts of your boat. It is plantation grown and will out last all the normal Mahogony's etc. You could get away with building in softwood, but you open yourself up to a boat rotting away under you in less than 10 years! Epoxy encapsula...

Hello Keith, I have never thought of trying to document all the changes to the Eventide design, but it has given me food for thought.... I aught to write it all down and add it for all to see! I have been trying to do that with all the other information I have been privvy to, this is a subject I had...

Sailing qualities?

Hello Keith, there is litle doubt the Eventide, if properly rigged and fitted latest keel etc, will out sail a WW. But the WW will be a lot more comfortable! Neither will be a greyhound to windward, but then gentlemen never go that way! Given a decent breeze they will both show most GRP Family cruis...
