Re: Athaena - Foredeck repairs
given the amount of work involved in removing all that I guess you have opted for the bast option. Bet it lasts for years and years and will be darned strong too. At this rate you will be afloat in time for Easter! I hope so! Certainly the treated area is rock hard now. I would have worried a littl...

Re: Kylix Handicap?
I believe the yardstick figures are derived by analysis of racing results. Unfortunately, that means for less common boats there is unlikely to be an official handicap figure. This is especially the case where there may be some variation in the design. Sorry I can't be more help, I hope someone else...

Re: Athaena - Foredeck repairs
Apologies that I've not update this thread recently, mainly due to the very cold weather limiting progress. I'm waiting for some glue and paint friendly spring weather. So what's the latest news for those interested.... Well the stem fitting came off very easily, mainly because the screws where eith...

Re: MG Drawings
John, I've sent a couple of emails, but they seem to be struggling to get through (I've had a few bounce messages).
I hope my request for a drawings CD and a burgee have reached you

Re: Haven't stopped looking for an Eventide!
sad that few have the time or inclination to look after wooden boats now. I'm coming to the conclusion that the real cost of purchasing a wooden boat is the time. I definitely feel a sense of responsibility toward my little bit of history that goes beyond what I actually paid for her  Chris

Hi John,
Do you have drawings of Athaena by any chance?
I'm trying to add all I can to her provenance and history.

Re: mainsheet handling
Interesting topic. Athaena has a single eye on a block just aft of her inboard tiller. I don't particularly like the arrangement and am minded to change back to a horse as was fitted originally (the original plugged holes are visible on the stern deck). I don't have a vang/kicker either and had wond...

Re: Athaena - Foredeck repairs
Good point Mike, Epoxy is OK on it's own as a glue but need filler stands of some sort in this sort of application.... Microfibres were sold to me for this and microsheres too, worked well. That's spot on, for any sort of "filling" work epoxy needs thickening to retain it's strength. There's some u...

Re: Athaena - Foredeck repairs
Thanks for the advice Mike :D At the moment, I'm minded to go for a method suggested in the Gougeon Brothers book and over drill the holes to around 10mm, fill with epoxy (thickened), then drill pilot holes and tap these holes to take machine screws. This method is apparently very strong. Just about...

Re: It's a pity that the site is not very current
Hi Chris, The point I was trying to make, rather badly, was that whilst I hope we would both enjoy that discussion, it would be private between us. I'm trying to make the distinction between a telephone conversation between two people and the same conversation in the pub. Having a conversation more ...

Re: Athaena - Foredeck repairs
Cheers John. I don't think for a second that the former owner knew about these problems when he sold me the boat. It very much looks like the "restorers" covered up some problems they found. I suspect this based on the way things have been smothered and gaps filled with the same brown sealant they'v...
