Re: GH 26 Keel question
well, 2 years on, and the Iroko is holding up really well! I tested them with a chisel - hard as a rock there - no signs of rot. When I jacked up the boat on the trailer, there was a little seepage of water from the joint - I guess it just squeezed the PU18 - I couldnt move it with a crowbar! I will...

Re: gh or eventide Yankee/Jib on a bowsprit
OK update 2. I have 3 quotes (pending more detailed measurements) Crusader (best price) - 'suitable' cloth weight Jeckells - Most expensive - 5.5 oz cloth Arun/Rockall (the original sail was made by Arun) - 6Oz - in between price. All 3 are recommending a much larger Yankee - 29-31 ft, with approx 1...

Re: GH31 bad leak: quarter berth, from cockpit...somewhere
I should be so lucky as to have a barn!
No, a large tent (made from the side of an articulated lorry, cut into sections, a couple of joists, lashed to where the boom would be, and perhaps a small blow heater is all I can get access to. At least I can get power and water.
Regards
JFJ

Re: GH31 bad leak: quarter berth, from cockpit...somewhere
This is an older post, and it may not be of much help but I have a persistant leak on the deck to bulkhead joint. This eventually led to s little rotspot beside the chart table. I think I have got to the bottom of it. Water appears to be getting between the teak joints. The caulking has dozed. I tri...

Re: gh or eventide Yankee/Jib on a bowsprit
An update - I phoned round some sailmakers Jeckells have made one before - in the early naughties The sail that they made last time was a yankee - 31ftX24X14 ft This is significantly bigger than the 27X20X10 that I currently have - though also highcut to me, it seems almost too big. I know that the ...

gh or eventide Yankee/Jib on a bowsprit
Hi all In the gale yesterday, I had a furler mis-fire, which destroyed my Yankee on Iris I may post (in the log) the adventure of recovering it - the boat pulled her mooring and 1/2 ton ground chain for 90 yrds through crowded moorings - so it was a journey! If anyone has a source for a yankee, in t...

Re: GH 26 Keel question
Hi All Just hauled out last weekend, and am pleased to report that GHM was absolutely SPOT ON - I built a grounding strip out of some old (20 year old) 2 inch Iroko, and 'glooped' it to the bottom of the keel with 3 tubes of something called 'PU18 - https://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=se...

Mooring with a bowsprit
Hi All Quick (and probably asked before) question. I launched Iris a couple of weeks ago, and been out and about strangford lough a bit. In Stangford, we use swing moorings. recently, most of the winds have been from the south and from there, there is some ;swirling'.... The boat has a fairly long r...

Re: Samson Post - question/warning
Fortunately, both the hole in the bowsprit, and the hole through the deck were coated - the bowsprit in rubberised gloop, the deck hole seems to be edged with fiber glass cloth of some kind. As a result, both the ply deck, and the bowsprit showed no sign of softness (thank God!). Hopefully, the new ...

A Bronze pin was driven through the sampson post and wedged to the deck rib also (as was in before). forgot to mention...

Re: Samson Post - question/warning
Saga continues..... I dug out the old stump of post, including bronze pins (though they got mangled in the process). I cut the old post about 8 inches below the deck, and inspected it for signs of rot. non found there. IMG_20161016_134951.jpg IMG_20161016_135005.jpg OK, so I got a new top of post ma...

GH 26 Keel question
Hi all Well, a chunk of Sampson post is off for a rebuild/refabrication.... Looking at it, I think I should have built it myself, but never mind... Question for this post, though, and perhaps some eventide's could help here too! I have recently got my hands on 10 planks of , 20 year old Iroko - stra...

Re: Samson Post - question/warning
Thanks very much Mark. I have chopped out the top of the post so far - the stump was rotten for about an inch into the break. I had to cut the pin under the deck - as you said, it was driven in under tension. the deck seams sound - the sampson post went through the bowsprit base. There was a piece a...

Samson Post - question/warning
Hi All During the storms over they weekend in Northern Ireland, Iris (26ft, Golden Hind) was cast onto the beech. The coast by her moorings is mostly shingle and rock - though the rocks can be up to some 4-5 feet across. Of course she hit a few of these, and lost some fibreglass underneath, which I ...
