Re: Calling all Senior owners, builders and dreamers!
Hi Simon, The stem can initially be bevelled purely to make removing more wood easier when the framework is being prepared for the ply skin. With my first plywood build only a small amount of bevelling was done down as far as the lower chine, after setting up and fixing frames, chines, hog, inwales ...

Re: YM Senior Outboard
Hi Keith, Bethem started with a 3.5 Mercury long shaft four stroke which for the broads was more than adequate, I played around with a 45lb thrust electric outboard and this was ok as well. Preference for estuary would be 3.5 or 4hp long shaft four stroke. Cutting the stern deck and creating an extr...

Re: YM senior - hull painting and others
Hi Joao, This is what I did on Bethem. Chines, primed joints with clear West epoxy, half hour later applied another coat, then used glass tape, coated again and removed all air bubbles, just as it went tacky mixed more epoxy with fairing filler and smoothed over. Once dry sanded and you can’t see an...

Hi Cris,
How did your Senior sail with the centre keel? Looks like a good set up for sailing on the Norfolk Broads!
Cheers Mat

Re: Calling all Senior owners, builders and dreamers!
Hi Keith I think the shallow bilge runners are a good idea, I’d thought about doing something similar on Bethem. Another idea was the addition of a skeg, although this would move the ce further aft as well. What I noticed when using the outboard was the boat did not track well if the centreplate is ...

Re: Senior Owner in Canada
Hi, good to hear from another Senior owner. I purchased a set of plans in the 1980s and my sail number is 1556. There is a section on the builders page about my Senior Bethem and an article in Watercraft Magazine appeared in the September/October 2020 edition. This is the second Senior I’ve owned, t...

Re: CD of plans
Hi Tarka,
You can get the CD from this site.
Best book in my opinion is ‘Building Chine Boat’ by Michael Verney. It was published by YM and deals specifically with the YM designs. There is lots of useful information on the Eventide.
Cheers

Re: Tarka
Hi Tarka, I know of the Eventide Merida which is around four miles away from where I live. Unfortunately I have a thirty foot Broads yacht I’m currently restoring and recently finished a Senior which is now back home being tweaked! If you let me know your timber requirements I’ll ask around! Cheers ...

Re: Tarka
Hi Tara, Good to see you are saving this Eventide, I did contemplate looking at her some time ago as, living in Norfolk, it’s about 45 mins drive to Wells, even sent an email to the owner but no reply. My advice would be to carry on airing the boat, remove all the bunk tops and locker lids etc and g...

Re: Senior Centre plate advice
Hi Keith, The sheave I used was a bronze ball bearing one which came out of an old wooden block kicking around amongst my boating junk! The strop I made from stainless wire with eyes each end (a friend lent me his crimping tool) and a stainless shackle attaches it to the centreplate lug. Even with t...

Re: Senior Centre plate advice
Hi Keith, Just to let you know, I made my centreboard case from 12mm elite ply with mahogany inserts. The logs along the bottom were made from 75mm x 30mm mahogany, epoxied to the sides. Before finally fitting I routed a channel on the underside so when it was bedded down on the hog with Sikaflex it...

Re: Senior Centre plate advice
Hi Keith, When my Senior was lifted out I left the centreplate down to check it before hoisting back into its case, there is not a huge amount on show when down so I’ve abandoned the idea of adding ply to the sides and profiling. The rudder, on the other hand, I made the blade from a one inch thick ...

Re: Roller-boom reefing opinions
Hi Matt, Personally I’d go for the slab reefing option. Most of the roller systems I’ve had in the past never seem to roll particularly well and trying to get the main flat never really worked, the leech ended up being too long and flapped about. It also meant going up to the mast to operated the ro...
