Re: Barbican 33 Centre plate

Sounds as if the surveyor has the right idea, keep all the metals the same!

Re: GH 26 Keel question

Agree about the dust etc from Iroko.. use a mask! I was told it was silicon from sand in the soil that gets into it, either way it can blunt tools and the grain has so many wobbles in it, that planing is fun! As you say cheaper than Teak! also in many ways better. We had Teak stern posts fitted to o...

Re: GH 26 Keel question

Hi JFJ, Iroko is a really strong and durable timber and will last for years, without even a coat of preservative. obviously you need to antifoul it though. I am 3/4 way through making a new Iroko bobsprit for an Eventide 26 at the moment and the grain and colour look great... It is the timber of cho...

Re: Samson Post - question/warning

Hi JFJ, As far as I know the sail areas are the same as the Eventide 26. the drawings were, as you can see on the GH page of the Gallery, a straight copy with just minor alterations to chine and ballast later. (OK some had stepped cabin tops too...) I have a 200square ft Genoa on roller gear. A litt...

Re: Samson Post - question/warning

Hi JFJ, The extent of the rot is alarming. Seems the timber was not half as durable as it should have been. The laminated Iroko should be much stronger.... and the glued on cap should stop water ingress into the end grain of the post itself! I realise now that of course the hull is GRP so normal GRP...

Re: Samson Post - question/warning

The story of the samson post is very alarming, I have one made of Afromosia and 4 inch square, so far so good! A friends however is in real need of tlc and I have sourced a 3 inch square length of iroko to replace his, it was oak but spilt down halfway to the deck and looking very suspect. I blame i...

Re: STEEL GOLDEN HIND 26

Hello simon, Just strayed onto the forum and seen your post. Great story and that does explain the description. We knew Terry offered steel as an option but as far as we knew he never had one built. Thus the query. I will add this description of her to the Gallery. Incedentally the Steel version of ...

Re: GH 26 Keel question

Hi JFJ, Fancy pants here! The idea of sacrificial iroko under the GRP is not a new one and as you have already found on Iris, many fitted them. A very good idea I would have said. I have a cast iron ballast keel so it does not need protecting, but almost every year when hauling out I notice the anti...

Re: Newby

Hello Simon. Same as with any boat when you step aboard and open the cabin use your nose! if it smells fusty and musty bet there is some mould somewhere and where there is mould there is rot. GRP hulls seem to fare well but they also suffer rot internally just like any other boat. The design general...

Re: Golden Hind 31 cutter rig set up: staysail boom or plans anyone?

Well done getting afloat early! The Staysail conversion can always be done later, but the sail will have to have extra eyelets in the luff low down so you can actually fix the lower hanks to a strong rope leading through the eyelets instead of hanked to sail direct, easy to do. This way as you lower...

Re: Golden Hind 31 cutter rig set up: staysail boom or plans anyone?

Hi Dave, Great news. Cannot lay my hand on my drawings at the monent, decorating and chaos! If you can mail to the Eventide mail address:- enquiries@eventides.org.uk I will pick that up for the Group! Then we can add it ro the drawings we are collecting for the GH.... to send to members. Many thanks...

Re: Golden Hind 31 cutter rig set up: staysail boom or plans anyone?

Sorry just noticed your post, a month or two late! I too have a boomed staysail, albeit on an Eventide. The gooseneck is mounted a foot or so back from the tack, so the sail prgressivly baloons as the boom pays off. The foot tension can be easily ajusted with a clew rope and cleat on the boom. My bo...

Re: waterwitch coe

Just seen this post and wondering if you have a set of drawings? they are available at cost to all members inc post £5.00 UK, from them you can work all this out! just a thought.. I know it is not actually marked for CLE, but basic school geometry allows you to do it and the card template of the und...

Re: junk rig

Hello Phil, As far as I know only 1 was ever rigged this way and it was such a disaster the owner re rigged conventionally. Certainly no drawings exist for the rig. Whatever you rig a Senior, it needs the later extra keel depth as per the extended bilge keel version with steel plates 6 inches deeper...

Re: Greetings from South Africa and question about whisker pole lengths

Hello KALEMANZI Congratulations on acquiring Pheonix. I sail an Eventide 26 and have a pole for down wind work. I found a telescopic Ali pole, it is not as long as i might wish for but at 10ft extended it works for the genoa. and when stored only 6ft long. the important thing is to make it strong en...
