Re: Standing rigging

I think I may have answered my own question. After further studying of the drawing I now realise that there is no backstay as such. There are two shrouds amidships and a further shroud a little further aft. Sorry if I have puzzled the forum with a rather confusing question

Standing rigging

I am in the process of planning the standing rigging on my 3 tonner and I'm a little puzzled about the position of the backstay. I have a drawing for a bermudian sloop sail plan by Alan Buchanan. Sail plan A drawing number 109. The drawing details a boom 13 foot 3 inches long. which extends right to...

preparation of inside of centreboard case

I am currantly reassembling the centreboard case on my three tonner and need to treat and paint the timber before it is all sealed up. What is the best paint for this job? I was thinking of using red lead paint but it;s hard to obtain. I was advised to use a mixture of white spirit and boiled linsee...

resealing centreboard

Hi Mike,
Thanks for your thoughts on this. It seems to make sense to reseal it with something that has gap filling properties and also has some flexibility. Yes it is all bolted and screwed together as well. Many thanks again.

Hi David, Just spotted your query. I might be a bit late here but to get some ideas about the framing for your cockpit sole, take a look at the yatch Virtue being rebuilt in Holland. I think the builder has used iroko for the framing and then used marine ply on top. If you type yatch Virtue into you...

Re sealing centre board case

I have recently disassembled the centre board case on my three tonner It was built some time ago and for peace of mind I thougt it would be prudent to redo the seals. It was a bigger job than I thought as it is a real solid structure. My question to the forum is, should I reseal it with a polyuretha...

Mike, Thank you for putting the photo on the forum. The hull is constructed out of larch planking, approx 1 inch thick, built on oak frames.I shall check the frame centres this week and get back to you. With regard to the hatch and bulkhead siting, if I build another hatch on top of the deckhouse, i...

Thanks Mike, The hull on my boat has been built as on the drawings but the deckhouse arrangement is somewhat different and looks a little amateurish. There was no existing bulkhead in the boat when I bought it and the boat was never properly completed. It has never seen water! The bulkhead I am atte...

Thanks Mike, the bulkhead is underneath the fore deck and has an eliptical shaped hole in it as on the drawings. unfortunately, the boat has been built with a different deck beam arrangement to the drawings and the bulkhead is positioned just infront of the fore hatch in the fore deck. I assume the ...

fixing screws through the hull

I am in the process of installing a bulkhead on my three tonner. I am intending to fix some shaped blocks of timber through the hull in front of the bulkhead and then fix the bulkhead to the shaped timber blocks. Should I use cotten grommets/ washers on the screws and if so, where can I obtain them?...

Hi Mike Thank you for the very thorough advice. There is so much information that I will have to print it off. I will, however, follow it to the letter. I do know of a place where red lead can still be bought in Liverpool. Is the method you describe suitable for clinker built boats such as my three ...

Thank you for the very sound advice and sorry for not replying for so long. Mike's foot notes to John's comments make a lot of sense to me now after I read all about the renovation of a boat called Fair Rover. The restorer of this boat put the vessel in the water and let the tide go in and out of he...

Hi John,
Thank you for the advice. You have given me the confidence to continue apace. I have also spotted those B&Q doors and thougt they could be put to good use in the cabin. I will try to get a few photos to the web site soon. Once again many thanks.

Installing a bulkhead on a 3 tonner

I am in the process of fitting a forward bulkhead on my three tonner and have just spent most of a full day making a template to fit around the clinker work on the hull. A nightmare for a novice such as myself but I managed to get a good fit in the end. What I need to know is how it is fixed in plac...
